What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR was originally created as a therapy to address trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It is endorsed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a PTSD treatment.

However, it can also aid in managing various mental health issues like anxiety, depression, addictions, behavioural challenges, relationship problems, as well as more severe conditions like psychosis and personality disorders

Many of these issues might stem from past traumas, whether from childhood experiences or adulthood encounters such as bullying, criticism, or abuse, which may not always be apparent.

This method involves moving your eyes a specific way while you process traumatic memories.

EMDR therapy is available with Justine online or in person.  As with many therapies EMDR works just as well online as it does in person.

EMDR Therapy Process Explained:

EMDR therapy follows a structured approach, with the therapist guiding you through various stages.

  • These stages involve assessing your current symptoms, evaluating your readiness for EMDR, and delving into how past experiences have influenced your present.

  • The therapist will clarify the origins of your symptoms, explain the impact of trauma on the mind, and address the perception that trauma is insurmountable.

  • Understanding the individual's journey and identifying patterns from past events is crucial to the process.

  • Preparing clients to confront traumatic memories is a pivotal step, ensuring their safety remains a top priority.

  • The therapy advances to accessing traumatic memories and initiating bilateral stimulation, which activates both sides of the brain alternately to access the subconscious.

  • Methods such as eye movements, alternating sounds, or tapping are used to engage the brain similarly to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

  • This process allows for the reprocessing of emotionally charged memories while keeping clients grounded in the present.

  • Therapists facilitate the natural healing process by reshaping negative or traumatic memories, leading to a shift in perspective from distress to empowerment.

EMDR therapy involves stages such as assessing symptoms, understanding past influences, and preparing to process traumatic memories.
