Understanding our family's history and migration story helps build stronger emotional connections across generations.

South Asian Heritage Month Family Mental Health - Every year across the UK, South Asian Heritage Month (18th July – 17th August) offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities.

Beyond the celebrations, it is also a meaningful time for families to reflect on the historical events that have shaped our local communities in Buckinghamshire today.

One of the most significant events in this shared history is the 1947 Partition of British India. The division led to one of the largest mass migrations in human history, forcing millions of families to leave their homes and rebuild their lives in unfamiliar places—including here in the UK.

For many parents and grandparents, the emotional impact of displacement, grief, and survival didn't end when they reached safety. Instead, these experiences became part of the family story.

Today, we know that historical stress and migration challenges can ripple across generations, influencing family relationships, parenting styles, and attitudes toward emotional wellbeing.

Recognising our shared history helps us build stronger pathways toward emotional healing, deeper family connections, and mutual understanding. By talking openly about intergenerational trauma and cultural identity, we can better support our children and elders alike.
