For many of us, a trip to the salon is a treat. But for neurodivergent individuals, those with sensory processing differences, or anyone struggling with anxiety, the salon environment can be overwhelming. The combination of bright lights, loud hairdryers, strong chemical smells, and the pressure to make small talk can turn a simple haircut into a source of dread.

We are delighted to share a wonderful new initiative right here in High Wycombe that is changing the narrative.

Optionz, in collaboration with Rey from Holistic Hair, is now offering dedicated quiet and sensory-friendly hair and beauty sessions. These appointments are designed to strip away the noise and pressure, offering a safe, dignified space for self-care.

Expert Experience

The inspiration for these sessions comes directly from Rey’s extensive professional background. Rey has spent years working with individuals who have sensory sensitivities, including time spent in specialist settings such as a residential and respite school in Shaftesbury supporting children with autism and complex needs.

Through her work, she recognised a significant barrier: many of her autistic clients preferred treatments at home because traditional high-street salons felt unsafe or chaotic. By bringing her expertise to Optionz, Rey has created a professional salon environment that adapts to the client, rather than expecting the client to adapt to the salon.

What to Expect During a Session

The "Quiet Session" is a bespoke experience where the environment is controlled entirely by the client's needs.

  • Atmosphere: The lighting is kept soft, and the music is either gentle and calming or turned off completely.

  • Sound Control: Noise is a major trigger for many, so hairdryers and loud tools are only used when absolutely necessary and always with advance warning.

  • Scent: The team uses fragrance-free, natural products to minimise olfactory overload. Clients are also welcome to bring their own familiar shampoos or products if that provides comfort.

  • Silent Appointments: There is zero pressure to chat. Clients are welcome to close their eyes, wear headphones, work on a laptop, or simply sit in silence.

Crucially, the appointment moves at a slower pace. If things become too much, clients can signal to stop, take a break, or step outside for fresh air at any time.

Who is it For?

While these sessions are a game-changer for autistic children and adults, the inclusive nature of the service means they are open to anyone who finds standard salons difficult.

This includes individuals with ADHD, anxiety, brain injuries, or sensory processing difficulties. It is also a beautiful option for those who are grieving and simply need a gentle, quiet space where they won't be expected to perform socially. There is no age limit, and parents or carers are very welcome to stay close by for reassurance.

The Impact of Patience

The difference this approach makes is profound. The team recently worked with a young child who found having her hair touched very distressing. Her hair had become badly tangled, which can often lead to shame or frustration in a standard salon.

At Optionz, they spent almost an hour gently combing through her hair at her own pace, using clear signals so she could pause the process whenever she needed to. The result was not just untangled hair, but a happy child and a delighted parent.

How to Book

To ensure the salon is truly quiet, these sessions are available by arrangement, typically on Sundays (when the salon is closed to the general public) or on Mondays with Rey.

If you or your child are anxious about trying a new place, Optionz offers a "meet-and-greet" service. You can visit the space, meet Rey, and get comfortable with the environment before you even book a haircut.
